It’s An Egg!

It’s An Egg!

With the Chickie Parents playing in the Florida sun, our fearless chicken wrangler was holding down the coop, making sure the girlies were well attended as the countdown towards the first egg being laid continued. The girls had been observed playing with the fake egg in the nesting boxes so we had it removed which took some adjusting when checking the feed after all these week seeing it in there.

Distracted by lemurs, feeding flamingos, and scampering lizards (ick) neither of us were keeping tabs on the coop video feed until leaving the park and then there it was- an egg!

A beautiful greenish blue egg!

I’d like to say that we carried on with our day after the discovery, but we’re first time Chickie Parents so clearly we sat at a local brewery and watched the footage of Mae laying her first egg.

And I’d like to say it stopped there but I can’t. When Vera laid her first egg we were again there watching the video feed. When Mae laid her second egg, we toasted delicious Belgian beers in celebration.

With each new layer in the flock our celebrations still occur. The urge to leave the office on time to collect the eggs is preventing Chickie Momma from logging excessive overtime. Chickie Daddy has a well maintained records of who laid an egg when.

I mean, we may be new to this backyard chicken life but there’s something exciting about opening the nesting boxes to see what eggs are awaiting. I can’t imagine it ever getting old.
