Summer Time Snacking

Summer Time Snacking

Sometime back in May our winter turned to summer and we were kicked outside full time. We really don’t mind, the views beat boxes and bookcases, we have more space, and Chickie Momma doesn't bother us nearly as much. The best part though? Our daily treats!

Long gone are the days of mealworms, a tapas sized portion of greens, or freeze dried crickets. Now the Chickie Parents bend to our telepathic messages and come out to the yard carrying yummy cold treats: watermelon, beet greens, cabbage, heads of romaine lettuce, colorful viola petals, cauliflower, carrots. We also have access to nearly the entire yard where they grow some of our favorite plants we didn't know existed like lilacs, hosta and potato vine.

Then they stepped up their game. Crickets. Live crickets!

Ada is the best catching them but we’re learning how to get faster snapping them out of Chickie Daddy’s hand. Chickie Momma keeps talking about the Mr. Pickle Rule* but she has to tell you more about that because we don’t know what she’s talking about...but think pickles are a food we should try. Oh and tell them to bring back the yogurt! We liked how it left or feet feeling less scaly.

*Girls, growing up your uncle had an anole lizard that for whatever reason was named Mr. Pickle (there was also a Mr. Pickle II and Spike). Mr. Pickle loved driving your aunt’s toy school bus around the house and was fed live crickets. If a cricket escaped the terrarium your grandma declared them free and we would not re catch them. Same rule applies for your treats- If a cricket leaves the coop or escapes we’re not going to track them down for you to munch. And you know I love you, but stop eating my lilacs!
