Road Trip

Chickie Daddy and Chickie Momma's travel addiction was alluded to earlier, but it's really an entire family ordeal: cats, Nico and Olé, both have taken international flights and have EU passports; Chihuahua Rennie has logged many miles throughout the states; our littlest family members were hatched in Ohio, road tripped to Indiana at 3 days of age, and have ventured to Chickie Daddy's house about an hour away once already.

It was nearly a month ago when we last loaded up the chickies to make the hour long visit to our destination. It was a crazy departure, mainly due to the fact their kitty brothers felt the need to take an Easter Sunday stroll around the neighbors' yards when we were already late departing. By the time we on the road it wasn't even a few blocks before I realized leaving the bell toy up was a mistake as we bumped along the pothole filled road. The girls were not fans of the bumps either. Cool temps and no traffic made the trip easy, as did knowing I wouldn't be driving them back up as they were staying with their Daddy for the week.

Fast forward to this sunny and warm Friday afternoon. Chickie Momma was delayed leaving the office as only further frazzled by commuter traffic, trying to get to our destination and have time for a wardrobe change for an event. With the music playing and six backup singings chirping in cargo class we were making time up. Were.

Then traffic slowed quickly. Then it stopped. When it became clear we weren't moving anytime soon, car was turned off, and window rolled down. The windows down initially was to maintain a decent temperature, but became essential with the brooder in desperate need of cleaning and 6 passengers who use the restroom every 30 minutes. (Seriously, I recently read somewhere that chickens evacuate all that waste up to 50 times a day and our girls may be above average.) No amount of NPR, country music, or even me talking to them were going to make my passengers happy.

We eventually made it to Chickie Daddy's where he was excited to see all his girls. The Chickies chirped through their account of the tale and ignored their chauffeur.

I guess they were over it the next morning when they were once again loaded up in the back of the car with Chickie Momma behind the wheel (it's what happens when you go plant shopping and Chickie Daddy's car was filled with purchases). The girls requested listening to their Daddy's music for a song or two, but as soon as they were chirping along with Bad to the Bone we flipped back to their usual country with a splash of pop.

Unlikely a family summer road trip is in the works, but at least they’re tolerant of short trips!

Excuse me, there seems to be a mistake. We requested a second row seat, not cargo.
